TruckWings Device Shows 5.25% Fuel Savings on CNG-powered Class 8 Day Cab Tractor

March 12, 2024 | ConMet

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Mar. 12, 2024 – MVT Solutions (MVTS), a provider of fuel economy testing and design and development services for the trucking industry, announced that ConMet’s TruckWings™ technology showed a fuel savings of 8.7 gallons for every 1,000 miles driven. That’s a savings of 5.25% on a modern, CNG-powered, Class 8 day cab tractor with a 54-inch tractor-to-trailer gap and a 53-foot dry van trailer.

“The fuel savings from TruckWings devices can be considered significant. The amount of CNG saved is the equivalent of 1,088 gallons of diesel annually,” says Daryl Bear, lead engineer and chief operating officer of MVT Solutions. “That translates to about 8.77 metric tons of CO2 for a tractor traveling 125,000 miles annually.”

The MVTS tests were conducted using 2022 Volvo VNL 6×4 CNG-powered day cab trucks with Cummins ISX12N-400 engines and Eaton Fuller EHD-14F transmissions. Trailers were 53’ Hyundai dry vans equipped with side skirts. The gross vehicle weight was approximately 48,000 pounds.

“Daryl and the MVTS team’s careful, thorough, and expert testing shows fleets can count on seeing these numbers or even better if their trucks experience a lot of cross winds,” says Daniel Burrows, VP and General Manager of TruckWings at ConMet. “TruckWings technology is proven to provide fuel savings or range extension regardless of a truck’s propulsion type, whether CNG, diesel, or even electric.”

The TruckWings product was created by Burrows’ company, TruckLabs, which was recently acquired by heavy duty components manufacturer ConMet. The acquisition, which took place in November 2023, complements ConMet’s dedication to providing OEMs and fleets with innovative solutions to improve fuel efficiency.
